So you saved some money by taking a DIY approach to your office design. Good for you.
Chances are, though, you cut some corners that are now making your headquarters feel a little… meh. Even if you’re happy with the design of your space, you may be overlooking some details that just don’t go together well. Interior design company Decor Aid has flagged some of the most common design mistakes, and how best to fix them. Here are five ways they suggest sprucing up your place of business that don’t require hiring professional help.
1. Poor lighting.
Skimping on lighting by using just one light source is a big no-no. Decor Aid suggests layering your sources of light to produce varying atmospheres during the the day and late afternoon. Task lighting like reading lamps are also efficient, while wall sconces add elegance and softness.
2. The wrong paint color.
Painting your walls without first having a larger color scheme in mind or choosing furniture is a good way to create a room that doesn’t match well. After settling on a color palette, Decor Aid recommends finalizing upholstery and a matching rug. Next, look for window treatments and furniture like tables and bookshelves that tie everything else together. (Wood and brass go with warm palettes, while nickel and steel work with cool palettes). Once all these elements are in place, you’re ready to choose your paint color.
3. Artwork that’s too high or low.
For art that’s not hanging above any furniture, make the center of the piece hang at eye level, so between 65 inches and 70 inches from the floor, depending on your height. For anything hanging above a sofa or other furniture, make sure there are between 6 inches and 8 inches from the bottom of the art to the top of the furniture.
4. The furniture’s proportions are off.
It’s easy to fall in love with a set of furniture, even if it’s slightly too big or small for the space you have to fill. Before buying furniture, visualize how much space it will take up by using to tape to create an outline of the dimensions on the floor. Having one large item is okay, as long as it’s the focal point of the room. A large number of smaller items, however, will create a cluttered feeling. The perfect combination of furniture will have varying heights, shapes and sizes, according to Decor Aid.
5. Too much clutter and disorganization.
If you didn’t factor enough storage products into your design budget, you’ll likely wind up with more items on display than you originally planned. You can use inexpensive wardrobes to neatly store a variety of items that don’t go well on bookshelves or coffee tables. Decor Aid recommends customizing these storage units with paint and wallpaper that fit with the overall design of your office.
